THE 20-GHOST CLUB HISTORY

The Worlds Oldest Rolls-Royce Motor Car Club

The 20-Ghost Club was inaugurated in 1949 by a group of owners of vintage Rolls-Royce cars. The name of the Club was taken from the cars which these founders owned, the legendary 40/50 horsepower Silver Ghost and its smaller counterpart, the 20 horsepower model.

The Club activities still revolve around the early cars such as Silver Ghosts, 20 hp and Phantoms, as well as models such as 25/30s and Phantom IIIs, as elegibility for membership extends to owners of all pre-1940 Rolls-Royce motor cars. With a membership which is now drawn from many countries, the Club consists of people who enjoy driving and sharing enthusiasm for the earlier models of ‘The Best Car in the World’

Numerous meetings and events take place in England, where many members reside, or in Australia, through the local chapter of the Club, but the 20-Ghost Club is also distinguished by its elegant overseas tours, as the emphasis is always on using the cars.

Since 1962 the Club has been running overseas tours, initially to Monte Carlo where members were entertained by the Prince and Princess of Monaco. Other years have seen visits to various European countries including France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Hungary. In 1978 the Club travelled via Sweden and Finland and became the first car club ever to visit Russia. In 1994 the Club toured Ireland and the Scottish Islands. The Club toured again in Norway in 1998, the north of Spain in 1999 and Champagne & Alsace in 2000, to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of Charles Rolls Channel Flight, and, later that year, another Scottish tour.

The Club also embarks on longer and more adventurous trips. On the maiden voyage of the QE2 in 1969 and again in 1989, members of the Club took their cars to New York and toured in the eastern United States; in 1979 the Club took twelve cars on a tour of Japan. In 1992 and twice since, there were tours in New Zealand.

In 1993 the Club had a major involvement in Alpine 93; nearly 50 Silver Ghosts travelled the original route of the 1913 Austrian Alpenfahrt to great local acclaim, particularly in Slovenia and Croatia, where they were the first foreign old cars to visit these new European states.

More recently, in 2004, the Club organised a prestigious tour to Monaco and return to celebrate the centenary of the formation of the Rolls-Royce Company. During this tour, participants stayed at luxury French Chateaux and visited several top name vineyards.

A major event took place in 2007 being a celebration of the Centenary of the original Silver Ghost.   Some sixty Silver Ghosts, including the Original Silver Ghost AX201 re-enacted the Scottish Reliability trials of 1907 which had been won by AX201.  For this event, cars came from the UK, Australia, The USA, New Zealand, South Africa and Hong Kong

Tours within the British Isles are regularly undertaken, including private visits to stately homes not open to the public.

The Australian Chapter organises frequent events, particularly in New South Wales and Victoria.

Club events are mainly non-competitive and for touring purposes, but a number of elegant and historic trophies are awarded annually by the Club. Various trophies are awarded at the annual concours; also for driving tests and for photographs published in the 'News and Record', the Club magazine which keeps members in touch and contains photographs and reports on the Club tours and activities, together with various historical photographs and articles relevant to our cars.
